PSAT
The PSAT will be given to all sophomores and any juniors who want to take it each year in October. For more information, visit https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10.
**Homeschool students who wish to take the PSAT must contact the high school counselor to make arrangements and obtain more information.
PSAT School Day – TBA
SAT / ACT
The SAT and ACT are offered on designated Saturdays throughout the year. The SAT is offered at Lufkin High School and the ACT is offered at Angelina College. Students will need to register to take these tests at www.sat.org/register or www.actstudent.org. If you qualify and are enrolled in the free or reduced lunch program, you qualify for a fee waiver for these tests. Once you use a fee waiver to test, you will receive fee waivers for college applications. Be sure to check with your counselor for more details.
FAFSA
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed each year by college students. Before completing the FAFSA, you must create an FSA ID first for both student and parent. These ID’s will be used to “sign” your FAFSA once it is complete. Be sure that you keep your login credentials in a safe place.
The FAFSA is the key you need to unlock money that will help you pay for college or other education after high school. Students often ask if the FAFSA is a scholarship, it’s not. The FAFSA is simply a statement about a family’s financial situation, and it’s used to determine how much federal financial aid a student may be eligible to receive.
APPLYING FOR COLLEGE
The “hub” for creating your college application and applying for college is Apply Texas. Please go to https://goapplytexas.org/ and create an account. Be sure to keep up with your username and password. Once you submit an application, you will be able to copy that application to other schools instead of filling everything out multiple times. This is a great resource.
Similar to early decision, you’re showing a strong interest in your top pick college. You’d apply early fall and usually get a decision from the university mid-December. Here is what makes early action different from early decision:
• You’re not contracted to attend if admitted.
• You can apply early action to other schools.
• If accepted, you may choose to accept the offer immediately or wait to consider offers of admission and make your final decision on College Decision Day (May 1 is the regular decision norm).
Texas Common Course Numbering System: https://www.tccns.org/
This is a great tool used to compare schools for credit transferability. If you click on compare schools, you can compare college courses taken at Angelina College with those offered at Stephen F. Austin State University for example. Compatible courses will be listed for those that are available.
